Voles & Pocket Gophers

Wildlife Control

Voles and Pocket Gophers can turn your yard or business property from a meticulously landscaped investment and place of enjoyment into an eyesore and health hazard virtually overnight. Left uncontrolled, these pests will undermine the surface of your property and destroy your landscaping and gardening efforts.

Voles are often confused with moles, but they are significantly different. Voles are mouse-like rodents, small and built for digging. They feed both above and below ground and attract predators like snakes and hawks to their habitat.

Voles cause significant damage to lawns and open areas. They also burrow under shrubs, flowers, and garden plants, damaging or destroying landscaping and plants. They girdle small and fully grown trees and dig out runways in open yards, damaging grass and creating eyesores. Trees that appear diseased but do not show any physical evidence of injury are likely to have been damaged by unseen vole infestation.

Voles carry and spread disease through their droppings and also carry ticks and mites. Household pets are likely to have unwanted interaction with voles, and also dig up yards trying to catch them.

Pocket Gophers are also rodents, but they live underground and are rarely seen outside their extensive burrow networks. They dig around the clock and throughout the year. While they are not social animals, they live in close quarters in separate burrows and will densely populate suitable habitat. Pocket Gopher infestation is usually not hard to spot, as they leave commonly recognizable mounds and other damage on the surface just above where they have been digging. Pocket Gopher mounds kill grass and other vegetation by destroying root systems.

Pocket Gophers prefer landscaped yards and gardens when they are available. The softer soil of maintained property is easier for them to burrow in than hard-packed and dry soil. Irrigated yards and gardens are very inviting for Pocket Gophers as well, as moist soil is even more attractive to them. Pocket Gophers eat all plants commonly found on landscaped and maintained land. In addition to the damage done to plants and aesthetic value, Pocket Gophers also damage home and commercial watering systems.

Pocket Gophers also present health hazards. Their digging weakens the surface, and cave-ins commonly injure adults and children walking or playing just above their burrows. Pocket Gophers also carry rabies and other infectious diseases. Household pets are at risk of gopher bites when they hunt them by digging for them.
